We are almost there for Minnesota Walleye Opener! Just 4 more short days! Below is an overview to help you increase your odds to put fish in the boat on opening day. I plan to put out a video report with a lot of the same information later this week, then resume weekly video and written reports after the Safelite Walleye Classic!
EAST END WALLEYES: Pike Bay will undoubtedly be some of the most trafficked water on opening day with good reason: it will hold the most walleyes. Lots of big fish recently dropped their eggs at the inlet of the Pike River, and they will not be far down the lake.
Long-line trolling number 5 shad raps and flicker shads will put good numbers of fish in the boat, as well as jigging with a minnow in the holes or on structure within the bay. Pick the way you’d like to fish and catch them how you want!
There are also plenty of walleyes to be caught outside of Pike Bay, and you will have less boat traffic to compete with. Lindy rigging the edges of holes in 17-32 feet of water will be very productive. Just drive until you see fish, then drop down and catch them!
WEST END WALLEYES: There will be walleyes in the holes, much like the east end. Focus on depths of 20-30 feet. A Lindy rig with a rainbow minnow is the best method to catch these fish.
It’s looking to be nice weather and a great opener on Vermilion. Justin’s remaining open dates in May are the 21st, 25th, 28th, and 30th, so book your trip to beautiful Lake Vermilion!
