A major cold front last week caused some big changes, but fishing has continued to be solid, and we have started noticing patterns for late summer walleye fishing!
EAST END WALLEYES: The best bite for walleyes has been in 14 to 25 feet of water along the bottoms of rock piles or rocky points. There are three different ways we have been targeting these fish, depending on the day and how they are schooled up.
The first method has been to drag Lindy Rigs tipped with a crawler or a leech. Trolling right at the base of the rocks can yield some really nice catches. I pull my Lindy Rigs at 0.5 to 0.7 mph.
Another effective method is pulling spinners with leeches or crawlers if the fish are more spread out. While pulling spinners, I use 1 oz per 10 feet of water and troll at 1.2 to 1.5mph.
Lastly, don’t forget the jigs. If the fish are schooled up tight, and you are used to catching them on jigs, that isn’t a bad option! 1/16 or 1/8oz tungsten jigs will both do the trick. Tip them with a half a crawler or a leech and go!
There are periodic good bites on the main-lake sand and gravel in 15 to 25 feet. These areas are worth a look. If you see a bunch of fish on your graph, you can probably catch them. If not, don’t waste time fishing. These fish are best targeted with a Lindy Rig and a crawler at 0.5 to 0.7 miles per hour.
WEST END WALLEYES: Fish are sliding down on the west side as well. Looking at the bottoms of rocks or deeper rocks is likely your best bet. 18 to 30’ of water is what we key in on. All the same methods apply as on the east side: Lindy Rigs, Spinners, and Jigs.
Do not neglect to fish the sand on the west side, specifically sand flats adjacent to bigger rock structures. 15 to 25’ are the depths to target. These spots tend to be really good in August on Lake Vermilion.
