Great fishing on Vermilion this week! The Leadcore bite has started and limits are the expectation on our guide trips!
EAST END WALLEYES: Leadcore has become the predominant pattern for us this week. We have been trolling the mud basins in anywhere from 17 to 30 feet of water. Number 5 Flicker Shads and Shad Raps have been our bait of choice. Trolling at 2.0-2.5mph have been the best speeds to put fish in the boat.
There are some fish on the sand in the early morning hours adjacent to the Leadcore runs. 17-25 feet have been the best bites for these fish. Lindy Rigging at 0.5-0.7mph with a leech or a crawler and getting up at the crack of dawn will yield the best results.
For a daytime, non-Leadcore bite, I would continue to target the rocks in 10-25 feet. A jig and a crawler or a jig and a leech will produce the best results.
WEST END WALLEYES: The Leadcore bite is starting on the west side as well. 20-30 foot mud basins are the target depths. While the same trolling speeds apply at 2.0 to 2.5 mph, we oftentimes upsize the baits on the west side to Number 7 Flicker Shads or Shad Raps, to match the larger average forage size on the west end.
For non-Leadcore fish, there are some fish to be had on the sand in 15 to 25 feet as well as some fish in the rocks in 14 to 30 feet. Lindy Rigging or pulling spinners is your best bet for fishing the sand, while a jig and a leech or a jig and a crawler are the best presentations in the rocks.
