Fishing Lake Vermilion

A day on a Lake Vermilion fishing charter starts with a convenient pickup from your resort, cabin, or Airbnb, so you can relax and get straight to the action. The boat is fully rigged and ready to go with bait, tackle, coolers with water, and all necessary safety equipment. From there, the guides take you to the best fishing spots, moving efficiently across the lake to maximize bite opportunities and keep the action fast-paced. While Lake Vermilion stretches 37 miles long, trips typically stay within 20–30 minutes of the starting point to make the most of your day.

Throughout the trip, anglers usually target walleye while following local regulations, including a four-fish limit per person and mandatory release of anything between 20 and 26 inches. At the end of the day, the guides clean and package your catch so you can take it home ready to enjoy. With a combination of expert guidance, strategic spot-hopping, and full-service support, each trip is designed to be safe, comfortable, and as productive as possible.

Target Species

Walleye fishing on Lake Vermilion is one of the hottest fishing opportunities in the state of Minnesota. The lake’s mix of rocky points, reefs, and weed edges provides ideal walleye habitat, making it a top destination for anglers seeking consistent bites. Walleye fishing on Lake Vermilion changes throughout the year as the fish follow seasonal patterns. In the spring, walleyes move shallow to spawn, making shallow points, flats, and bays prime targets. During the summer, they often move to deeper structure, humps, and weed edges, feeding more actively in low-light hours. Fall brings aggressive pre-winter feeding, with walleyes roaming shallow and mid-depth areas.

While walleye are the primary target, the guides can also adjust trips to pursue other species such as crappies, northern pike, bass, or perch upon request, tailoring the experience to match your interests and giving anglers a chance to explore the full variety of Vermilion’s fishery.

Where We Fish

On Lake Vermilion, the guides adjust fishing locations and techniques to match the season. Early in the season, anglers fish the shallows in 6–12 feet of water using slip bobbers and jigs to target spawning walleyes. By July, trips move to deeper water in 15–25 feet, where Lindy rigs and spinners are most effective. In September, walleyes push even deeper, though fish can be caught throughout the lake using lead-core trolling and spinners. By October, the fish move back into shallower water, and the focus shifts again to jigging, keeping action consistent as the season winds down.
